Hi! My name is Sarah, and I’m so thrilled that you’ve stopped by!

Hidden Room Originals is the home of my colourful, customized mixed-media artwork shop and blog. I began working with paper and embellishments via the scrapbooking trend of the 90′s, and have emerged in 2013 with stacks of photos (still) waiting to be scrapbooked while I work on personalized artwork instead! I work in the “hidden room” studio,┬átucked away around the corner and above the garage, of our home in the pretty little town of Fergus, Ontario. You can reach me directly by visiting the Contact page.

I truly love the idea of creating something unique and special for a loved one. Something that no one else will ever have, and that is tailored to that person. I use a variety of tools and supplies to create my pieces – beautiful fabrics, archival quality papers and embellishments including buttons, ribbons and handcrafted accessories. I love the challenge of interpreting what a customer would like, and discovering ways to make the work even more personal. My latest development includes the ability to incorporate the client’s handwriting into the artwork.

Part of my mission with Hidden Room Originals is to give back to the women and artists of the world who work so tirelessly to support their families in difficult circumstances. I am an avid Kiva.org supporter, and as such, $1.00 from each Hidden Room purchase will go directly to supporting women who are seeking to improve their lives, and therefore the lives of their children, via a Kiva loan. You can learn more about HRO’s commitment to Kiva here.

I am also a very proud Canadian, and I endeavour to support Canadian businesses, artists, authors and causes as much as possible. To that end, several years ago my sister Jennifer and I began the Canadian+Handmade blog that highlighted different Canadian artisans on a daily basis. We still post there semi-regularly and are active on Twitter (@canadahandmade) supporting Canadian small business as much as we can!

When not working on Hidden Room projects, I can usually be found working with my husband on the family business, enjoying the company of our 2 young daughters, tweeting (find me @sarahjanesroom), drinking tea with friends, knitting, reading – most often a novel found at The Bookshelf (my favourite little independent bookstore in Guelph, Ontario) and daydreaming about heading to the airport with passport in hand.
